Play­wright Nicholas Spag­no­letti and soft­ware engi­neer Edward van Kuik have cre­ated this ele­gant estab­lish­ment to pro­vide Cape Town with a unique new space for con­ver­sa­tion and creativity.

About the bar

Alexan­der Bar attracts a mixed crowd of inter­est­ing locals young and old as well as a smat­ter­ing of tourists from the neigh­bour­ing hotels. The bar is filled with old-world charm and is engi­neered to get peo­ple talk­ing. The func­tion­ing antique rotary dial tele­phone sys­tem encour­ages you to chat to peo­ple all over the bar. And you can also dial 9 to ring the bar­tender. The menu is fairly priced and there’s some­thing to eat and drink whether you’re on a stu­dent bud­get or feel like splash­ing out. We favour craft beers and local wines from smaller pro­duc­ers and we have  a clas­sic range of well-made cock­tails using fresh, high qual­ity ingre­di­ents. Alexan­der Bar & Café is the ideal place to meet up with friends or strangers. Come on a work­ing day for lunch and Bean There Fair­trade cof­fee. Or come for after-work drinks and snacks. Or for pre-dinner drinks (per­haps before walk­ing some­where very nearby like Fork, Keenwä, Savoy Cab­bage or Freres Bistro). Or for a light meal. Or before & after catch­ing a show Upstairs or at one of the other the­atres nearby like The Fugard or Artscape or The Inti­mate.

Kitchen open til midnight

Our kitchen serves clas­sic sand­wiches and sal­ads with a gourmet twist as well as cheese, char­cu­terie & canapé boards. Try The Alexan­der Reueben (beef fil­let, pick­led onion, sauer­kraut topped with grated cheese), The Great Gatsby (bratwurst with pick­les, pre­serves and whole­grain mus­tard), the Smoked Trout (cured in a gin-based brine), the Baron of Bree (Brie cheese, caramelised onions, baby leaves on rye) or sal­ads like the Seared Beef Noo­dle or Cur­ried Chicken.
