Conversation Bar
Playwright Nicholas Spagnoletti and software engineer Edward van Kuik have created this elegant establishment to provide Cape Town with a unique new space for conversation and creativity.
Shows Upstairs
Upstairs there is a fully equipped theatre for intimate live performances: come watch live music, comedy, drama, readings and more. It’s like a little festival venue all year round. Booking essential — see Shows Upstairs for details.
About the bar
Alexander Bar attracts a mixed crowd of interesting locals young and old as well as a smattering of tourists from the neighbouring hotels. The bar is filled with old-world charm and is engineered to get people talking. The functioning antique rotary dial telephone system encourages you to chat to people all over the bar. And you can also dial 9 to ring the bartender. The menu is fairly priced and there’s something to eat and drink whether you’re on a student budget or feel like splashing out. We favour craft beers and local wines from smaller producers and we have a classic range of well-made cocktails using fresh, high quality ingredients. The background music is impeccably selected jazz and world music and the furnishings are warm and inviting. Join our Newsletter to receive discounts and offers.
Mondays to Saturdays from 11am to 1am. Closed Sundays.
Alexander Bar & Café is the ideal place to meet up with friends or strangers. Come on a working day for lunch and Bean There Fairtrade coffee. Or come for after-work drinks and snacks. Or for pre-dinner drinks (perhaps before walking somewhere very nearby like Alfama, Fork, Keenwä, Savoy Cabbage or Roberto’s Signature Restaurant). Or for a light meal. Or before & after catching a show Upstairs or at one of the other theatres nearby like The Fugard or Artscape or The Intimate.
Kitchen open til midnight
Our kitchen serves classic sandwiches and salads with a gourmet twist as well as cheese, charcuterie & canapé boards. Try The Reueben (beef, pickled onion, sauerkraut topped with grated cheese), The Great Gatsby (bratwurst with pickles, preserves and wholegrain mustard), the Gravadlax (smoked trout cured in a gin-based brine), the Baron of Bree (Brie cheese, caramelised onions, baby leaves on rye) or the Waldorf or Seared Beef Noodle salads. See our menu for more details.
