“Sharp, funny and immensely entertaining. If you didn't get tickets for Russell Brand, don't worry, The Belgian will have you in stitches instead.” (Tracey Kim Saunders)

“Falling somewhere between a stand-up comedy show, an interior monologue, a Monty Python sketch and a lost Charlie Chaplin film, The Belgian is an unfiltered gaze into the mind of its peculiar performer, Gaëtan Schmid.” (Cape Times)

 “… hilarious …” (Cue)

“… anarchistic …” (False Bay Echo)
The Belgian is a hilarious trip into the mind of a most misunderstood species: Belgians!

Behind the façade of their clean little houses with their neat little front garden patrolled by smirking garden gnomes… something obscurely wicked is lurking… and some waffles. The Belgian aka Gaëtan Schmid (Body Language, Rumpsteak, The Dog’s Bollocks) will regale you with extravagant stories about everything and nothing. From his childhood amongst the cows in Belgium to understanding braai etiquette in present day South Africa. Sometimes you might wonder where reality has been a little bit stretched – but who cares? You will be entertained with such panache and jubilation, that you won’t be able to resist a smile, chuckle and laugh.

This is not a show about France.

Audience Responses

The Belgian was absolutely fabulous! Very funny and entertaining! You just need to have more bar staff working, just before the show starts, to avoid delays....

We thoroughly enjoyed it, but probably partly because we have a Belgian connection. Not sure if it would be as entertaining for those that haven't though!

Hi. For first-timers the whole Alexander's experience was a great discovery. The vibey pre-show bar was most enjoyable. The show was witty, well presented and to the point hilarious with a few comments that will be revisited like spotting a "phoque". We will definitely be back.

Excellent show. Pity that he kept looking at his notes to see what he still needed to talk about. But still - excellent show

If 1 is tops & 5 the worst, I would give it 4. Why? The show came over as totally unprepared, chaotic, to fast and not at all flowing from one sequence into the other. Sans rancune Lieven

Hi, I attended last night. Enjoyed the vivid imagination of Schmidt (Cant say the name you know)but it was not flowing enough. I suggest they link with each other. Perhaos a bit more about Afrikaans words with a different meaning in Flemmish? Such as opgewonde etc. Keep going I will attend one of your shows again - great escapeism Lukas 0825584917

The show was impeccable. The Belgian, with great panache, hilariously depicts the confounded foreigner's experience in South Africa, and as a Belgian myself I couldn't resist laughing at the absurdity of these vivid experiences. Merçi Gaëtan !

Anything by Gaetan is bound to be good. He researches his shows well and his enthusiasm is catching. I will see it again after its run in G'town when it goes to KBT. It's good to have him back on stage with something new. Fun and funny

There were parts of it where Gaeton seemed unprepared although I just thought that was part of the show and added to the humour. Overall, we had a good laugh and we enjoyed it.

3 - perhaps not fluid enough between subjects. I'm sure he will be more confident in the next show.

We thought it worthwhile - the audience was hard work for the artist. Liked his personable manner & somewhat more limited use of profanities that seems to be par for majority of comedians.

We had such fun! And at times it cut rather close to my family's Flemish bones...

It was very enjoyable and i think it will become even more so once Gaetan has had a chance to polish the show.

It was very very very disappointing. A waste of time. Not fun at all. Boring....
