Wait

Physical Theatre performance • Running Time: 40 mins
Directed by Nathalie Vijver | Written and performed by Raine Waring
Monica is waiting to be saved, waiting for the return of her lover, waiting for the mirror to reflect a more favourable reflection, waiting to be let out of her cage and most importantly, waiting to be accepted. 'Wait' is an original one-woman play that explores the complexity of gender as seen through the eyes of a woman struggling with her identity. This play delves into the mind of Monica Van Zyl, a character fraught with insecurity. She has a distorted view of her self-image, internally and externally, constantly doubting herself and her place in the world and in love.
Wait is daring, innovative, thought-provoking and outspoken. It is an original piece of theatre, written and performed by Raine Waring and directed by Nathalie Vijver. Wait reveals the struggles and tribulations of being a woman in today's society. The style of the performance is highly physical and thoughts, emotions and inner states of being are manifested through the body. The play uncovers the difficulties that women experience trying to free themselves from the cage that society tends to impose on them. It shows women’s relentless waiting for acceptance and the desperate desire for freedom and love. Wait tells a truthful story that will encourage the audience to question themselves and their roles in society. Wait made its debut at the 2016 New Talent Weekend at the Masque Theatre in May.
