When in doubt, say darling

2 performances between March 22, 2018 and March 23, 2018
Comedy
Pieter-Dirk Uys
60mins

A new show about forgetting, forgiving, remembering, faking, making-up and doing: "WHEN IN DOUBT SAY DARLING."

An entertainment with Pieter-Dirk Uys and other darlings.

Sometimes politics repeats itself, not only taking history and turning it into farce, but taking farce and turning into the fake news which is now called entertainment. Pieter-Dirk Uys is sorting out 40 years of distress, disguise and disgust: from apartheid to tripartite, from amandla to Nkandla. Wigs, glasses, wagging fingers, toyi-toyis, red berets, trump cards of madness, icons and aikonas. From Bezuidenhouts, Raubenheimers and Ramaphosas to Altzheimers. At a time when a casual greeting or embrace can be seen as racist or harassment, the advice is simple: when in doubt say darling.  If you can't remember their names, just say darling.  If you get lost along the road to somewhere, simply ask for Darling. He did it, and now Pieter-Dirk Uys also lives in Darling. Join him and many darlings on an exciting walk to the edge of the next cliff when the end of the world seems nigh. It used to be called a sunset. Here's a secret: the sun will also rise tomorrow, darling.

Audience Responses

Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Pieter Dirk Uys again. Makes you laugh, but also makes you squirm in your seat. Did feel that the ticket price at R160 was a little steep.

I enjoyed the different personalities portrayed. Some more than others but Pieter-Dirk Uys personifications of the different characters are awe-inspiring and, in the case of the old man soon-to-be-shipped-off-to-a-retirement-home, very thought-provoking. Based on the title of the show, perhaps I was expecting a show about Darling and other darlings, but it consisted of different sketches and characters put together (like a summary of many different shows) rather than a show with its own theme. Parts of the show felt a bit static and the Afrikaans punchlines were rather lost on us, the non-Afrikaans speakers. All in all, an entertaining evening.

Pieter-Dirk Uys, is truly a legend in his own time. The intimate setting of the Alexander Bar Theatre was perfect for this show, it felt like sitting in his kitchen in Darling just having a chat with a good old friend.

brilliant. He is one of the most amazing actors and cabaretists I have ever seen. Spooky, how he can slip into characters. What an artist and personality.
