Play Things is a cult platform of music, theatre, writing, comedy and experiments for artists of any form.
The first Sunday of every month is our open mic style platform where you never know what will happen. running at an hour or more, the show is R30/R20 and participation is only lightly curated to get pieces of 3 to 10 minutes and a mix of genres to keep the audience on their toes. The night is often a tester for work to develop further and so far Dirty Words, The Modern African, Last Rounds, Dani and the Lion and #BALLETMUSTFALL (opening in January) have all gone on to full runs.
If you’d like to perform or present work at Play Things please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
Special thanks to Nardus Engelbrecht Photography for the great images of the performances.
Play Things on First Thursdays:
A Cape Town phenomenon, First Thursdays has brought the crowds out to the city centre after hours as galleries, shops and bars stay open late on the first Thursday of every month. Our contribution is the Best of Play Things – audiences drop in and out of free sessions of 15 – 20 minutes between 6 and 8pm.
7 January line up:
6.00pm – Stuart Lightbody (sleight of hand)
6.30pm – Lyndall Cain, Matthew King, and Jason Potgieter (writing, performance art, poetry)
7.00pm – Muti Films presents Boat Girls by Roger Young (short film)
7.30pm – Lance Herman (music)
