Hayleigh Evans stars in Unfair Lady, on at Alexander Upstairs until 12 December
Tell us a little more about your show?
The show is a little bit of a rant about the ridiculous expectations set up by women’s magazines… But we believe it to be a very funny rant.
And what’s next on the cards for you?
Returning to Joburg and getting stuck in for the POPArt program in 2016. Performance wise, we are looking at a new production, “Norman’s Wall”, which Orly will direct.
And the project you’re dreaming of?
I quite like the idea of sketch TV. But being paid to do it.
How did you get into theatre?
I’m practically crippled by the idea of auditions, so Orly and I thought it would be easier to start our own theatre, and later, production company…
Dinner with any two figures from history: who would you invite and what would you serve them?
Marilyn Monroe and Jennifer Saunders.
We’d have to eat something ridiculously decadent (which I would definitely order in because I can’t cook) and then we could talk about things like how curves are FANTASTIC, all the while praising Marilyn for starting the trend.
Then we would definitely eat some double cream ice cream.
Favorite spot in Cape Town (besides Alexander Bar, obviously)?
Fuck. Not sure, the only other place i’ve been so far is the green point spar. So favourite is definitely still the Alexander Bar.
What excites you about theatre?
The fact that it’s live and is happening right in front of you. My favourite kind of theatre is the more intimate stuff- there’s something incredibly magical about sharing a one off experience with a group of strangers.
What mistakes have you made and learned the most from?
I’m not great at admitting to mistakes, but I always try and fix them so I don’t have to. I think the lesson here is that you can never screw up so bad that it can’t be rectified. Just don’t wallow.
Who do you think people should be talking about?
Yoh! it’s hard to choose, but i’m gonna have to punt the Joburg peeps. Some of my favourite ensembles and performers at the moment include:
THENX LADIES – a sketch comedy group with the brilliant MoMo Matsunyane, Zethu Dlomo, Kitty Moepang & Boitumelo Motsoatse. These women are fierce, and going places!
The STASH CREW – they’re a fantastic art rap band that cover everything from politics to queer agenda. Their new single with Umlilo drops before the end of the year – Can’t Wait.
then, obvs all the awesome talents that made up the POPUpstairs collective: Jemma Kahn, Roberto Pombo, Rachael Neary and Lebogang Mogashoa. I LOVE working them, and I believe everyone has some really exciting plans on the rise for he coming year… so #watchthisspace.
ALSO, Klara Van Wyk… We’re opening up POPArt’s 2016 season with “YOU SUCK” and I cannot wait.
