Who’s Upstairs: Rebecca Makin-Taylor

Rebecca Makin-Taylor stars in Sillage, on at Alexander Upstairs from 20-25 Febraury 2017

Home town?
Philadelphia. Off the N7. Near Atlantis

Tell us a little more about your show?
Sillage is about a mother and daughter who have drifted appart. While packing up the family home, they try to fix their relationship and in the process experience love, loss, regret and a sense of alienation from one another. It is a play about a mother and daughter trying but, for the most part, failing to understand one another.

And what’s next on the cards for you?
Performing Sillage at the NAF and a possible JHB tour.

And the project you’re dreaming of?
I work predominantly in English so i am dreaming of performing in an Afrikaans production next. I would also love to play a comedic role!

How did you get into theatre?
In high school we did a production of Twelfth Night. I played Viola and my high school crush played Orsino. I enjoyed our onstage romance so much i wanted to make a living dressing up and playing different people.

Dinner with any two figures from history: who would you invite and what would you serve them?
I would invite Bette Davis and Big Mama Thornton. I would serve them my favorite meal, lamb shank followed by baked cheesecake (none of that fridge cake nonsense)

Favorite spot in Cape Town (besides Alexander Bar, obviously)?
We are spoilt for choice in Cape Town! My favorite ‘dinner at a good price in cape town’ spot would be Marikas in vredehoek. Diaz tavern is a close second in the good value for money category.

What excites you about theatre?
With theatre you are watching a story unfold live in front of you which is pretty damn exciting. There are no second takes, and it could all go so horribly wrong, but when everything and everyone on stage is working well its incredible to witness. The fuckups are also fun!

What mistakes have you made and learned the most from?
I drank too much red bull at drama school. Dont do it. Its not good for you.

Who do you think people should be talking about?
There are so many talented actresses working in cape town at the moment. Currently Bianca Flanders is top of my list of people to watch. If you missed her one woman cabaret Lola last year, then dont miss her in District 6 Kanala at The Fugard.
